WATA Gravel Grinder, Waterbury, VT

And then at about mile 9, I knocked my wife to the ground...

That was just one of the highlights along the WATA gravel ride in and around Waterbury, Vermont.

Ever since we did the Muddy Onion a couple of years ago, Jean and I have been fans of gravel rides. Great routes, great vibes, and great views have pulled us back for more and more rides, and this was our first year at the Waterbury Area Trail Alliance Gravel Grinder.

We opted for the shorter "traditional" loop which included about 27 miles and 2800ft of climbing and it was filled with--as promised-gravely goodness.

The ride started with a neutral roll out to the base of about a two mile climb. It was the perfect way to shake the legs out and the perfect spot for me to drop--and destroy--my trusty Canon G7X. I've loved this little camera for its ability to shoot high quality RAW images from a compact size. Damn.

Anyway, after that little setback, I was left with only my iPhone for pics and GoPro for video, because, you know, if it wasn't documented, it didn't happen.

Oh yeah, I mentioned that I knocked Jean over... well, I tried to be a funny guy and scoot between her and Liz, but I knocked handlebars with Jean and she got jostled left and over-compensated right and knocked Liz over too. D'oh! Needless to say, I was apologetic! That's why I should never be in a peloton.

Aside from the completely avoidable crash and destroyed camera, the remainder of the ride was awesome with killer climbs and amazing views. There were a couple of rest areas, one with chocolate covered bacon and beer, another with GU, and another with maple-whiskey shots. You know, health foods.

The health theme continued at the end with pulled pork tacos and beer at the finish. Not to sound too much like a complainer, but it would be nice if people acknowledged that there's more to beer than IPAs, IPAs, IPAs and more IPAs. How about a nice altbier? Or a delicious stout? But I digress...

All in all, it was another stellar day of riding in Vermont! Thanks to WATA and all of the ride sponsors (even the IPA brewers), and extra thanks to Lazy Lions Campground!

Video is coming shortly.
